Orion and Horsehead

Orione e Testa di Cavallo Full

The Story

This extraordinary composition reveals two of the most famous nebulae of the Orion Molecular Complex. The Horsehead (Barnard 33) stands out as a dark silhouette of dense dust and cold gas, superimposed on the ionized red glow of hydrogen (H-alpha) emitted by the IC 434 nebula behind it. It is a region of active star formation where the stellar winds of nearby massive stars are slowly eroding the dark cloud.

Beside it shines the Flame Nebula, whose intricate structure is cut by dark dust bands hiding a cluster of young, hot stars within. The ultraviolet energy of these stars, including the bright Alnitak (Zeta Orionis) - the easternmost star of Orion's Belt visible in the image - ionizes the surrounding gases, causing them to glow.

The image captures the dramatic interaction between high-energy radiation and interstellar matter in one of the most studied and fascinating regions of the winter sky.
